LCD Soundsystem's Final Bash, Relived
For an indie band, it seems almost impossible to achieve massive commercial success without losing credibility. LCD Soundsystem may have figured out the secret.
The New York band, mostly through the efforts of its frontman, James Murphy, has a sound that's not quite electronic, not quite punk rock and not quite dance. (Whatever it is, though, it makes you want to dance.) The lyrics — poignant, ironic, revealing — add to the appeal. It's a marketable appeal at that: Two years ago the band's third album, This Is Happening, debuted in the Billboard Top 10.
Of course, other indie bands have cracked the top of the charts now and then. Here's the thing that makes the members of LCD Soundsystem different from just about anyone else at the top of their game: They quit. Three albums in, with sold-out shows and overwhelming critical acclaim, Murphy pulled the plug on it all.
The decision was complicated. Murphy acknowledges as much in a new documentary called Shut Up and Play the Hits, which will play in theaters for one night only on July 18. The film follows LCD Soundsystem through its final concert, a nearly four-hour, sold-out affair at Madison Square Garden last April. It also tracks Murphy offstage, winding down and reflecting during the band's final days.
"I don't want to be a famous person — I like riding the subway, I like eating food, I like being a normal person," Murphy tells an interviewer at one point. "I'm 41 — I don't think I could adjust to the kind of weird dichotomy. But is that a good enough reason? If you believe in your band and you claim to like music, and you claim to like making music for people, is that a good enough reason to quit?"
Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern are the directors of Shut Up and Play the Hits. In the full version of this segment, they share stories with NPR's David Greene about the making of the film, as well as their own perspective on the end of LCD Soundsystem.

Beatles 'Images of a Woman' Signed Painting (1966)
Lot consists of an original, one of a kind oil and watercolor painting by The Beatles, known as "Images of a Woman". This incredible painting by the Beatles was done out of sheer boredom. They arrived in Tokyo on June 29th, 1966. Because they had received death threats before the trip to Japan, they were advised not to leave their hotel room until it was time for their concert at the Budokan Hall. The Budokan Hall was used for sumo wrestling, which of course was very popular in Japan, and there were protests outside the stadium by people who felt the Beatles should not be allowed into the home of sumo wrestling. To keep busy while in their hotel room, the Beatles were given some paper and paints and over the course of two nights, they collaborated on this painting. The paper they were given was approx. 30" x 40" and was placed on a table with a lamp in the center. Working with the light of the lamp, each member of the Beatles decorated their own corner of the paper with oil paint and watercolor. Paul's corner has a symmetrical, psychedelic feel, John's has a dark center surrounded by thick oils, George's part is large and colorful, and Ringo's has a cartoon like image. When the lamp was removed from the table, it left a white circle in the middle of the painting, which was signed by all four of the Beatles. Once complete, this painting was presented to Mr. Tetsusaburo Shimoyama who was a curator of Shochiku-Kaikan and chairman of the Beatles Fan Club Japan. Image size seen is approx. 30-3/4" x 20-1/2". There are some light cracks and a few tiny areas of paint flakes and crackling. Incredible one of a kind painting by The Beatles.

Reports that the Russian Orthodox Church is almost overwhelmingly in support of the vigilante militia groups has dark precedents in Eastern Europe.

Moscow police won't add orthodox militia to patrols
Ivan Otrakovsky, left, and his Orthodox guards Photo: avmalgin.livejournal.com
Moscow police have called declarations that voluntary orthodox militia would patrol Moscow streets together with policemen to be "premature." The declaration was made by the head of the Orthodox movement "Holy Russ" Ivan Otrakovsky."We haven't worked on this issue in the Ministry of the Interior. It is premature to talk about any kind of joint work," – a source in the Ministry of the Interior told Interfax.
The head of the department of the regional security in the Moscow government, Alexai Mayorov, said he was against joint patrols with orthodox militias.
"I think this is the wrong approach. This breaks society apart, we have a multi-denominational nation. This looks like some kind of private initiative. We already have a normal practice of voluntary militias in Moscow, they form on a territorial principle. It has been rather effective, and we will develop this further," Mayorov said.
Earlier on Wednesday Otrakovsky told Interfax that the voluntary Orthodox militias start to patrol Moscow and the region, and that they would coordinate their actions with police.
"If we find persons who are performing a sacrilege, offend the Orthodox faith, or show aggression towards Orthodox priests, we reserve the right to take measures," Otrakovsky said.
"We keep in mind that we are orthodox people, and this is our land, we own it and we answer for it. <…> We cannot observe calmly how our faith is trampled upon, followed by cowardly silence or even cheers of traitors, Christ's apostates." Otrakovsky added.

Putin's 'Politburo 2.0'
Interestingly I was chatting to a Russian facebook friend earlier and he had this to say:damn... sounds like there'll be a civil war in russia over pussy riot.. certain neo-nazi/neo-christian groups are threatening to patrol the streets from now on... everybody wants attention and the dogs are out.. I wonder what the police are going to do...it's a worry. Will right-wing 'hooliganism' run afoul of the law too?
